Mumford & Sons well backed to be 2009’s Hottest Song

The Mumford & Sons hit Little Lion Man is the clear punters choice to take top spot in this year’s Triple J Hottest 100 after being backed off the map at Sportingbet Australia.

Little Lion Man was posted as a $5.50 favourite when markets opened but punters swarmed to back it into odds on favouritism at $1.50  ahead of Uprising by Muse at $3.75.

Sportingbet Australia’s Bill Richmond said there had been big money for a number of songs but Little Lion Man was definitely going to be hard to beat.

“Close to 75% of the money has been for Little Lion Man and $5.50 into $1.50 is a huge betting move in any market,” Richmond said.

“However, there has been good money for Uprising with it shortening from $9.00 to $4.00 and a big move at odds for Home by Edward Sharpe and Magnetic Zeroes which opened as a $67 chance and is now third pick at $6.50.

“There are probably a couple of other hopes as well with Lily Allen’s Not Fair an early favourite and her presence in town for Big Day Out might counter the fact the song was released earlier in the year.”

Richmond said songs released later in the year did have a very strong record though.

“Unless a song, such as last year’s winner Sex On Fire, have been smash hits for a long period the currency is important which does count against the likes of Lily Allen and the two songs by La Roux,” he said.
