Only one of 3 teams can win Super Bowl XLVI

Only one of three teams can win Super Bowl XLVI and there’s one reason why: they’ve got the elite quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers’ Packers, Tom Brady’s Patriots and Drew Brees’ Saints have been just about untouchable through the first 13 weeks of the season and, more than that, all three have done it all before.

Green Bay Packers were champions last season, New Orleans the year before that, and Brady has three rings with New England.

The trio of quarterbacks has been posting huge numbers. Rodgers, in particular, has been picking apart defences at will and is on track to post the best ever season by a quarterback – Dan Marino’s single-season record of 5,084 passing yards and Brees’ record 70 per cent completion percentage for a season are both within his sights.

Yes, these guys can have bad days, but they are at such a level that even their worst is respectable by normal standards. Rodgers said he was “frustrated” and “didn’t throw the ball very well” against Tampa Bay in a 35-26 win in November. He went 23-for-36 for 299 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception. The Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger – the closest of all the other QBs to be considered elite – has thrown for three touchdowns twice all season.

You only have to look at the Indianapolis Colts to see the importance of an elite quarterback. Four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning guided the team to the Super Bowl title in 2006 and another appearance only two years ago. He’s sat out this year with a neck injury and the Colts are 0-12.

It must be said that the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers are also having outstanding seasons. Coached by brothers John and Jim Harbaugh respectively, the two teams are battling it out for the tag of best defensive unit in the NFL. But there is one huge question mark over both: neither has come up against an elite QB so far. Just how will they fare then?
