Only one of 3 teams can win Super Bowl XLVI
Only one of three teams can win Super Bowl XLVI and there’s one reason why: they’ve got the elite quarterbacks. Aaron Rodgers’ Packers, Tom Brady’s Patriots and Drew Brees’ Saints have been just about untouchable through the first 13 weeks of the season and, more than that, all three have done it all before.
Green Bay Packers were champions last season, New Orleans the year before that, and Brady has three rings with New England.
The trio of quarterbacks has been posting huge numbers. Rodgers, in particular, has been picking apart defences at will and is on track to post the best ever season by a quarterback – Dan Marino’s single-season record of 5,084 passing yards and Brees’ record 70 per cent completion percentage for a season are both within his sights.
Yes, these guys can have bad days, but they are at such a level that even their worst is respectable by normal standards. Rodgers said he was “frustrated” and “didn’t throw the ball very well” against Tampa Bay in a 35-26 win in November. He went 23-for-36 for 299 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception. The Steelers’ Ben Roethlisberger – the closest of all the other QBs to be considered elite – has thrown for three touchdowns twice all season.
You only have to look at the Indianapolis Colts to see the importance of an elite quarterback. Four-time NFL MVP Peyton Manning guided the team to the Super Bowl title in 2006 and another appearance only two years ago. He’s sat out this year with a neck injury and the Colts are 0-12.
It must be said that the Baltimore Ravens and San Francisco 49ers are also having outstanding seasons. Coached by brothers John and Jim Harbaugh respectively, the two teams are battling it out for the tag of best defensive unit in the NFL. But there is one huge question mark over both: neither has come up against an elite QB so far. Just how will they fare then?

Have to agree with you here. Aaron Rodger’s and the Packers look like the team to beat for mind at this point. Their offence is extremely potent with Rodger’s in charge but my one query is their defence. Although they can score a lot of points, they can also let quite a few in averaging a touch over 20 points scored against them in the 13 rounds to date. This is an area that will need sharpening up.
The Pat’s have been very impressive after their mid season 2 game losing streak. They have really hit their strides posting strong wins against the Jets, Chiefs, Eagles and Colts. Tom Brady is in career best form throwing for 30 TD’s this season.
Bree’s has been solid all year and if he continue this run of form then there is every chance that the Saints could go on with it.
Looking forward to the finals….
Humbug!!
Yes, you are correct – They are having outstanding seasons. Both Brady, Brees and especially Rodgers. And yes, Brees and Rodgers have won titles in the last couple of years… But they both needed defenses to bail them out in the playoffs (GB vs. Eagles last year) and Darren Sharper scoring on an interception the year before. Brady’s last? 2004 season = 7 years ago, when he had some of the best defenses behind him. Since then he’s had amazing offensive numbers and 0 rings (2007 compares to GB this year). Peyton Manning, you said it 4 MVP’s 1 ring.
Give me a complete team that is putting it together at the right time. Unfortunately it looks a lot like pittsburgh is putting together another run. Baltimore would be very dangerous if they get homefield. Texans just keep winning with a good/great defense and efficient run/vertical attack. 49ers is a dark horse, new to the scene so how will they react. And what 6th seed will squeak in and play with house money?
Best playoffs in years in store i think.
Rubbish….Have you not heard about a man named Tebow?!
The man has God on his side. Enough said.
7-1 since he took over as starter. Better record in that time than the golden boy Brady. As good as Brees. As for Rodgers, we all know what happened to PM back in 2009 after a 14-0 start: They lost.
Broncs to win the Superbowl in the dying seconds with Tim running in the winning TD. Then Tebowing.
It’s Tebow time.
