Manly and Collingwood: Where is the love?

The only thing worse than a smug Manly fan is a cocky Collingwood supporter … actually, they’re as bad as each other. So why do the two football clubs we all love to hate have to be premiership favourites going into the NRL and AFL grand finals?

Surely any sane person would like to see Geelong win the AFL premiership, having lost their greatest player and a supercoach. The Cats were supposed to be on the decline. But they’ve proven they’re a champion team with a new brand of football courtesy of rookie coach Chris Scott. Geelong have beaten Collingwood twice this year, including by 96 points just four weeks ago, and would complete a remarkable season with their third premiership since 2007.

We’ve already endured 12 months of Collingwood gloating; we can’t cope with another year. It is coach Mick Malthouse’s farewell game at the club. Fairytales are rare in sport – just like back-to-back premierships.

And who can’t love the Warriors for their exciting football style, even if they are mostly Kiwis? They deserve an NRL title, to soften the blow for a looming World Cup meltdown. And the Warriors got rid of premiership favourites the Melbourne Storm, so surely we owe them our support.

Manly think they’re better than everyone else. They thumb their noses at authority as shown by their ongoing battle with David Gallop and were responsible for the ugliest brawl in decades just five weeks ago.

The Sea Eagles won a premiership three years ago; surely it’s somebody else’s turn.

But the both the Magpies and the Sea Eagles are likely to start short-priced favourites in both codes. On form, they’ll both win.

So, as a sporting fan, is backing Collingwood and Manly to win and getting a pay day out of the teams you hate the only way to stomach this weekend’s sporting atrocities?
