ASHES 2009
The Ashes has kicked off again. I’m a little late with my preview thanks to a couple of leisurely days off but I’ll have a crack anyway. Day one was a pretty even start so I don’t think too much would have changed in terms of betting for the series.
Basically the punters have stayed true to their green and gold hearts and backed the Aussies straight out and in all the exotics. The Aussies are by far our worst result with their price getting out to $1.92 for the series prior to day one because of the Brett Lee injury news and the threat of rain and competent English cricketers. The $1.92 was eaten up by patriotic punters, as was Australia winning the series 1-0. Punters thought odds of $51 was overs considering the seies will be very tight and rain could be a plenty. At this stage a result from the first test looks likely so those punters would be nervous.
In the exotics Simon Katich has been well backed to top score in the series against his teamates ($5) and against all batsmen ($9). That’s a sound investment in my opinion as he opens the batting and will therefore get every opportunity. Hughes is very young, Ponting is out of touch and I’m happy to pot Clarke, plus Hussey will get less of an opporunity down the order.
In the bowling Mitchell Johnson has been popular for leading Australian wicket taker. He was well backed at $3 prior to Brett Lee’s injury and was just as popular afterwards at odds of $2.50. Siddle and Hilfenhaus both bowled very well last night though so $2.50 might be unders despite Johnson’s ability.
